  • So Easy To Make: Just peel and slice your apples toss them in a brown sugar and cinnamon mixture and bake.
  • Make Ahead Recipe: Easily make these apples ahead of time and warm them up right before serving.
  • Inexpensive: This recipe serves at least 6 people for just a few cents per serving!

How To Make

Even though these baked sliced apples are easy to make, we wanted to show you how to make them step by step. Head to the recipe card at the end of the post for complete instructions.

  • Prepare the apples: Peel the apples, cut them into 1/2 inch slices and place them in a large bowl. Toss them with brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, salt and melted butter.
  • Bake and serve: Bake the apples for about 40 minutes, tossing in between cooking. Serve the apples warm with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream on the side.

What Kind Of Apples Are Best?

Any crisp apple will work for this baked apple recipe. You don’t want a softer flesh apple like a McIntosh or Golden Delicious because they will break apart after baking.

Crisp apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, Cosmic Crisp, Pink Lady, Gala or Granny Smith apples are all good choices. We like to use a combination of a couple of them for different flavors and textures.

Is This A Make Ahead Dessert Recipe?

Yes. You can make these apples ahead of time and warm them up right before serving. The microwave is really the best option because it will heat the apples up quickly without changing the texture too much.

Alternately, you can prep the apples, get them into a baking dish, cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake. Since we toss the apple slices with lemon juice they won’t brown as they sit.

How To Serve

Our favorite way to enjoy these apples is with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The warm apples melt the ice cream and create the most amazing sauce. Caramel ice cream, coffee ice cream, butter pecan and cookie dough are also wonderful choices.

Besides ice cream, you can also serve these apples with whipped cream, chocolate sauce or caramel sauce. We also love serving these baked apples with a round of our Apple Pie Shots for parties!

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 5 tablespoons butter, divided (3 tablespoons melted, 2 tablespoons not melted)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

  2. Place the apple slices into a large bowl and add both sugars, 3 tablespoons of melted butter, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon and salt. Toss to combine.
  3. Butter an 8″ x 11″ baking dish (see note) and then pour in the apples. Dot the top of the apples with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, cut into smaller pieces. Wrap tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  4. Remove the dish from the oven and stir gently so you don’t break up the apples. Uncover and bake for 10 minutes longer. stir again and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Recipe Notes

You can use a 9″ x 13″ baking dish, too but the apples may be done quicker so just watch the cooking time.

Store: To store leftover apples, transfer to an air tight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

Reheat: Reheat a serving of the apples in the microwave until just warmed through.
