How To Make Boat Dip
Here’s a couple of step by step pictures to show you how we like to make this, but for complete instructions head to the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Sour Cream and Seasonings: Add sour cream, Ranch and taco seasonings to a bowl and whisk to combine. We like to do this step first so that all of the seasoning gets mixed in well with the sour cream.
- Cheese and Ro-Tel: Stir in grated cheddar cheese and a can of drained Ro-Tel. Cover and chill.
Can I Make This Dip Ahead Of Time?
Yes! And actually, you should chill the dip for about an hour before serving to allow the flavors to blend together. Of course, we’re usually dipping into it right away, but an hour in the fridge is a good place to start.
However, you can make this dip hours before your party, even the day before. Just make sure to stir the dip again before serving.
Why Is It Called Boat Dip?
Most stories or videos will tell you that it’s called Boat Dip because it’s a fun, light, creamy and cool dip that’s often enjoyed on a boat or by water. Of course you don’t need a boat, you can enjoy this dip at the beach or by the pool and definitely just sitting in your kitchen.
Good to note: this is a sour cream based dip recipe so if you are enjoying this at the beach or on a boat where it’s warm, make sure to keep it in a cooler so it doesn’t spoil.

Ingredients
- 16 ounces sour cream
- 1 packet taco seasoning (1 ounce)
- 1 packet Ranch seasoning (1 ounce)
- 10 ounce can Ro-Tel, drained
- 8 ounce block cheddar cheese, grated (see note)
Instructions
- Add the sour cream, taco seasoning and Ranch seasoning to a bowl. Whisk together well to combine.
- Add the drained Ro-tel and cheese and stir to combine.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour to let the flavors combine. Stir again before serving.

We prefer grating the cheese on our own because it tastes better than the kind that’s already shredded in a bag. There is a lot of cheese in this dip recipe so it does make a difference in flavor!
